Masks act as a filter barrier to protect our respiratory system and can effectively prevent infectious diseases. It is necessary to choose a mask reasonably and wear it correctly. At present, the masks on the market are mainly divided into three categories. One is cotton masks with lower filtration efficiency; the other is disposable medical masks with higher filtration efficiency and non-woven fabric; the other is protective masks with higher filtration efficiency.
Cotton mask
A mechanical filter mask that filters through layers of cotton cloth. Cotton masks have the lowest filtration efficiency and can only have a certain blocking effect on coarse particles like hair, but they have the best warmth and comfort.
Disposable mask
Using non-woven fabric as the main material, the filtering effect is slightly higher than that of cotton masks. Medical masks without the words "protection" and "surgical" on the name are ordinary grade disposable medical masks, which do not require blood barriers There is no requirement for adhesion. For extremely small particles, the protective effect of disposable masks is not as good as that of protective masks. Therefore, it is only used in general medical environments. But it can be used for larger particles, such as dust, pollen, and fly floc.
Medical surgical mask
Medical surgical masks are used for the protection of droplet isolation, and medical surgical masks are required to be worn in infectious disease departments and fever clinics. It is divided into 3 layers, the outer layer has a water blocking effect, which can prevent droplets from entering the mask to its inside; the middle layer has a filtering effect, which can block particles larger than 5μm in the air, and the filtering effect is ≥90%; the inner layer near the nose and mouth is used for Hygroscopic. However, medical surgical masks have limited particle filtration efficiency, and are mostly rectangular in design, and their adhesion to the face is not as tight as medical protective masks.
Protective mask
Medical protective masks are commonly referred to as KN95 masks. The filtration efficiency of medical protective masks for non-oily 0.3μm particles is greater than 95%. Medical protective masks have a good fit with the wearer’s face, which can filter particles in the air and block flying. Contaminants such as foam, blood, body fluids, secretions, etc., have a filtration efficiency of over 95% for non-oily particles, and are commonly used personal protective equipment for airborne diseases. The protection is high, and the breath ability and moisture absorption of the mask also deteriorate, which means that the comfort of wearing it is reduced, and the wearing time cannot be too long. For the general public who are not high-risk occupational groups, it is not necessary to wear KN95 masks to prevent new coronavirus pneumonia. Medical surgical masks can also block most of the viruses stuck to the droplets from entering the respiratory tract.
